Welcome Back!
We are excited to welcome both returning and new students to Nelson Mandela High School for another great year of learning and growth.
As previously shared, we will be running a modified schedule on Monday, August 31. Students should log in to PowerSchool to review their timetable before arriving at school.
If a student's timetable includes "See Counsellor," they should report to their Success Advisor in the Success Office, where they will receive support with their schedule and course planning.
We are looking forward to seeing our hallways filled with students once again and beginning another successful school year together.
Picture Day
Student photos will take place on the first day of classes, August 31. More information regarding photo packages and ordering will be shared by our photography provider.
Friendly Reminders
Personal Mobile Devices
As has been the expectation over the past two years, cell phones, smart glasses, and headphones are not to be visible or in use during instructional time unless specifically permitted by the teacher for learning purposes.
Teachers may ask students to put devices away and, when necessary, may hold devices for the remainder of the class period.

Academic Integrity and Assessment
With the growing availability of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, it is important that students continue to submit work that reflects their own understanding, thinking, and effort.
While AI can be a valuable learning support, teachers must be able to accurately assess what a student knows and can do independently. As a result, students should expect that significant learning and assessment opportunities will occur in the presence of their teacher and that regular attendance remains essential.
In situations where submitted work does not align with a student's demonstrated learning, previous performance, or classroom participation, a teacher may:
- Meet with the student to discuss the work;
- Ask follow-up questions about the content;
- Require the student to demonstrate their understanding through an alternate assessment or conversation.
The student's demonstrated understanding through this process will inform assessment decisions. When a reassessment is required, parents/guardians will be notified in advance, and the reassessment will take place during before- or after-school tutorial time.
Our goal is to ensure that grades accurately reflect student learning while helping students develop the skills and responsibility needed for future success.
