🙌 Community Appreciation & Celebration
I want to take a moment to thank all members of the Nelson Mandela school community. As a school, we strive to embody and celebrate our four values of resilience, intelligence, courage, and humility, and this year I have seen these values lived each day by both our students and staff.
There was much to celebrate this year across all areas of school life. In academics, our students continued to excel, with increasing 3- and 5-year high school completion rates and hundreds of thousands of dollars earned in scholarships. More of our students are transitioning successfully to post-secondary than both the CBE and provincial average, while others have taken advantage of a wide range of off-campus and dual credit opportunities to build meaningful pathways for their futures.
Beyond the classroom, students demonstrated incredible commitment and talent in extracurricular pursuits. Our Girls Soccer team captured a City Championship, while Model UN, Speech and Debate, and Robotics programs continued to grow, compete, and represent our school with pride, with Robotics expanding to include an additional team next year. In the arts, Mandela students shone through performances and exhibitions, including the Dance Empire at the East Side Dance Festival and Calgary Surge Games, and a collaborative art exhibition, “Monsters and Heroes,” at the New Gallery.
Our students also made a meaningful impact in the broader community. The Mandela Jazz Band performed at the Calgary Stampede Showband Competition, while our Leadership students engaged in the Mandela Cares initiative and were featured on Global News. Individual excellence was also recognized at the highest levels, with Shaan J. earning Gold at Provincials and Bronze at Nationals in the Skills Competitions.
These accomplishments reflect a school community that is deeply engaged, values growth, and is committed to excellence in many different forms. We are proud of what has been achieved this year and look forward to continuing to build on this strong foundation in the year ahead.
